Stijn Claessens (1959) is senior adviser in the Financial Sector Vice- Presidency of the World Bank. He started his career as a research fellow at the Economic Research Unit and Project LINK of the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and has been a visiting assistant professor at the School of Business Administration, New York University, before joining the World Bank in 1987. From 2001 to 2004, he was professor of International Finance Policy at the University of Amsterdam. His current policy and research interests are firm finance and access to financial services; corporate governance; internationalisation of financial services; and risk management. He has provided advice to numerous emerging markets in Latin America, East Asia and transition economies. His research has been published in the Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Finance
and Quarterly Journal of Economics
. He is on the Editorial Board of the World Bank Economic Review
and an associate editor of the Journal of Financial Services Research
, and a fellow of CEPR.
